Dust Battlefield First Impressions

I played my first game of Dust Battlefield today (well as much as one can without really having the complete rulebook or unit cards).  This article will cover some of things I discovered about this game as well as my first thoughts about it.  I can summarize what I am going to write in more detail here:  There are a number of changes made to the units in the new Dust Tactics/Battlefield that I really like but the core game play mechanics leave me unimpressed.

Unit Inspection: SSU “Silent Death” Steel Guards Sniper Squad

Although they may have lost much of their body in the fight to defend the Motherland these snipers, many from the ranks of the Jnetzi, continue to fight in these large steel VK powered exo-suits.  Now possessing the strength on five men, the Silent Death have armed themselves with heavy rifles normally mounted on vehicles or placed in fighting positions.  They maimed soldiers have both the talent and technology to combat even the mightiest of armored walkers.

Over 10,000 Views: Wow!

Clash at Zverograd has rocketed past 10,000 views.  In fact, the last few weeks my daily numbers have been matching what use to what used to be my best days in months past.  I will attribute it to the Dust Studio and Battlefront Babylon Kickstarter which looked like it worked out quite well.  I glad to see more people looking into Dust, and for my part, Dust Warfare.  This article, like my other # views articles is where I take a moment to go over the status of Clash at Zverograd.

Unit Inspection: Allies Hero Johnny One-Eye

John Coviello  a.k.a Crazy Coviello a.k.a. Johny One-Eye earned his last nickname as an Office of Strategic Services (OSS) agent.  The loss of this eye should have forced Coviello to retire, however; he repeated all of his training just to prove that he was fully capable of performing the mission.  If anything, even more so.

Unit Inspection: SSU Auxiliary Attack Squad “Chinese Volunteers”

Trained as a paratroopers to jump from the back of MIL 45 Helicopters at high altitude and used for rapid deployment and smirching, the Chinese Volunteers can run the gamut from highly trained commandos, to Chinese loyalist spies to gather information on their Russian “comrades”, and in some extreme cases, conscripts given the basics of a paratrooper and minimal supplies and treated as cannon fodder.  No matter what these volunteers background, woe is those that ignore them as they are still highly capable guerrilla fighters.

Unit Inspection: Axis Hero Manfred

Manfred Kreuzer is a world famous German explorer even before the war.  He had blazed a trail where no man had ever seen on every continent of the world and experienced hundreds of amazing things in his travels.  However, it is what he discovered during his military Antarctic exploration of Queen Maud Land that has drastically changed him and the world.  The extraterrestrial mineral known only as VK along with its potential ramifications fortified the Axis officer in to a man hell bent on world unification under the Axis no matter the cost.  These reasons are still not completely understood.  What is known is that as a military field commander Kruezer is as courteous as he his dangerous.

Unit Inspection: Allies Hero Ozz 117

Little is known about this Allies hero.  It appears that great care was taken to erase this man of mystery’s past.  Even the top spies of both the Axis and SSU blocks have little information on Ozz 117 before taking that codename.  What is known is that he has a very efficient and effective military mind.  He has proven to be both uncanny and wily able to for survive attacks that should by all rights have slaughter him and his men.  He is not beloved by his fellow soldiers despite this as he appears to be a cold, calculating man that many troops feel he sees soldiers as just a resource to be used to gain victory more more or less important and any other means to win.

Unit Inspection: Axis Hero “Panzerprinz”

Wehrmacht Oberst Prinz Walter von Ferstenwerth is one of the most highly decorated tank commander serving the Axis bloc.  He and his family have  a long tradition of military service.  Oberst has become one of the von Ferstenwerth’s most brilliant military careers.  He eraned most of his fame serving in the Afrika Corps where even Rommel himself praised in his combat knowledge and giving him the nickname “Panzerprinz” or Tank Prince.  After the Nazis had been purged from the Axis, Panzerprinz was recalled from the Africa to the Eastern Front to use his supreme knowledge of armor tactics to thwart the Communist bloc.

Unit Inspection: SSU “Red Storm” Red Guards Assualt Platoon

The Red Storm represent the best of the best of the SSU’s soldiers.  It is one of the most prestigious units within the Bloc and any troop even considered is an honor.  These soldiers are battle hardened veterans who, once selected, receive highly intensive training in nearly every light arm and personal explosive ever conceived by man.   As such, they are far more armed than most SSU infantry units.  Unfortunately, few Red Storm units see much battle as they used in propaganda films and photos are as rear area guards for highly important persons, intelligence, or material.
